What we are about

Friends of KDH is a non-profit company (NPC), established in 2023, with the purpose of offering additional care and support to patients and staff at Khayelitsha District Hospital.

The hospital is a lifeline to residents in the Khayelitsha and surrounding areas, many of whom are impoverished, aged, or limited by disabilities. Due to budgetary and capacity constraints, many of the elements of care that make a hospital a warm place of safety, care, and wellbeing are not able to be delivered, to the detriment of patient experiences and the ability of hospital staff to deliver services required.

The NPC works to ensure that patients and staff at the hospital are treated in a way that recognises their dignity and humanity, by:

  • Equipping and improving facilities to elevate patient care, hospital hygiene standards and treatment outcomes.
  • Capacity-building interventions for hospital staff which improve ability to service and deliver care; and
  • Improving the accessibility of educational, training and development resources to hospital staff.

The NPC was founded by, among others, a midwife with a passionate heart for the patients at the Khayelitsha District Hospital. She noticed there were gaps which an NPC could help to bridge.  The NPC coordinates projects and rallies volunteers to increase support beyond what can be provided within the budget and resources of the Department of Health. It recognises that hospitals and hospital experience can be traumatic for the people who use and spend time in them. The NPC will channel resources, knowledge, and care to the places where they will make the biggest impact.
